Moving on: Howard Webb retires from refereeing

Top football referee Howard Webb has put an end to his 25-year refereeing career, reports the official site of the BPL.

The Brit's new occupation is Technical Director of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). This means he will be responsible for overseeing the technical direction and standards that govern the on-field performance of PGMOL’s match officials, something more needed now than ever before in the world of modern football.

He will also take a public-facing role, informing and educating on refereeing matters.

Webb said he was very excited to start this new chapter in his career. He has participated in a total of nine FIFA and UEFA tournaments and has refereed a FIFA World Cup final as well as a UEFA Champions League final. He was also appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to football in 2011.

WEBMASTER'S OPINION:

Most football refs retire in their forties. However, not all of them continue to work in the football world and contribute to the game. I wish Mr. Webb all the best in his future endeavours and hope he will keep his watchful eye pointed to the football pitches around the globe to ensure nobody is breaking the rules.
