Today was the BPL's first match day for the new season!
Hooray, the new season of the world's best football league is upon us!
Here's the review of today's games:
MANCHESTER UNITED 1, SWANSEA CITY 2
The surprise of the day definitely happened at the Old Trafford in Manchester, as United hosted Swansea City.
The Dutch mastermind Van Gaal received a warm welcome at the Trafford. Unfortunately, nobody knew what was to happen at the ground yet.
Ki silenced the Red Devils in the middle of the first half with with a great effort from just outside the box.
The crowd was silent and Van Gaal showed no emotion.. yet.
At halftime he pulled off one of his trademark tactical switches, as United arranged themselves in a 4-2-3-1, with Nani coming in for Chicharito and Young and Jones turning into wing-backs.
Results were quick to come, as Wayne Rooney hit a nice little overhead kick near the line.
Rooney also had a nice mid-ranged curled free kick effort, which, unfortunately for Utd fans, did not find the net, and instead bounced off the crossbar.
The hosts' unconvincing play soon resulted in them falling behind once more, when Gylfi Sigurðsson (what a name, what a player) banged in a loose ball. The Trafford was silenced for the second time.
Swansea's stable late-game defense successfully kept them ahead until the final whistle of what was a deserved win for them.
I think the result of this game was completely warranted, because United certainly did not play like winners in this game, while Swansea came out tactically and mentally prepared and gave them a cold shower in this first Premier League game.
After the match, Van Gaal pointed out:
"Every club where I have been, I've struggled for the first three months. After that, the players know what I want. I am very direct. I say things as they are so you have to adapt to that way of coaching. It's not so easy."
Therefore, we should look out for United again in November at the earliest.
FACT: THIS IS THE RED DEVILS' FIRST LOSS IN AN OPENING GAME AT OLD TRAFFORD SINCE 1972
What happened around the grounds
I will not be posting a detailed review for every game (only for the most interesting one), but only a short summary.LEICESTER 2 - 2 EVERTON
Elsewhere, we saw Leicester snatch a point versus the favoured Everton in a game which ended 2-2 (McGeady 20', Ulloa 22', Naismith 45', Wood 86').QPR 0 - 1 HULL CITY
James Chester scored the only goal in this not-so-interesting game. Q.P.R. had a chance to equalize through Charlie Austin, but he missed his penalty in the 84th minute.STOKE CITY 0 - 1 ASTON VILLA
Andreas Weimann won the game for Villa in the 50th minute of this anticipated game, which saw Bojan's debut as a Stoke player.WEST BROM 2 - 2 SUNDERLAND
Sunderland's Lee Cattermole got the lead for his team after 5 minutes had been played at the Hawthorns. The 0-1 did not change until the 42 minute mark, when Caherino converted a penalty to equalize. It was his name again screamed by the announcer as WBA took the lead themselves in the 74th minute, but their happiness only lasted for 11 short minutes before Larsson shaped up the final result of this league tie: 2-2.WEST HAM 0 - 1 TOTTENHAM
This was one of the more interesting games today, as the Spurs found themselves with 10 players when Naughton was sent off (29'). Fortunately for their fans, Mark Noble failed to score from the resulting penalty, with the tie remaining unbroken until the very end of the game, when Eric Dier, a Spurs defender, showed some striker qualities with an excellent effort to silence the Boleyn ground for the night.| Dier's fantastic goal in stoppage time |
ARSENAL 2-1 CRYSTAL PALACE
Another quality game filled with suspense until the very end. The teams exchanged goals through Hangeland and Koscielny, before Puncheon got himself sent off and Aaron Ramsey scored the late winner and the Emirates erupted.FACT:THERE WERE THREE RED CARDS AND TWO PENALTIES ON THE OPENING DAY OF THE BPL
WEBMASTER'S NOTE OF APOLOGY: Sorry for not writing here for the last week... I had some motivation issues, but I assure you that more interesting news are on the ways! The first article is also going to be posted soon.
